got balls?

8 October 2000

We had our first breadboard test of FrostBite today,

and all four NPC 60522 motors are working fine. In addition to a steel snowplow blade on the front, Frostbite has 4 steel spikes on the rear. But our main formerly secret weapon is armored, non-deflatable wheels (AKA bowling balls). Yesterday, though, we did a wheel test.

First, Danny used a piece of black electrical tape to modify my Skilsaw table saw

Next we introduced Mr. Bowling Ball to Mr. Table Saw

The results were depressing...it seems that even lowly table saws cut through bowling balls like butter. If we stick with the bowling balls, we'll add tread around the outside to increase traction and increase ground clearance.

With luck, our parts orders will be completed in time to upgrade, including:

The plan is to use the aluminum body with the bowling balls, but if we decide to go with regular tires, we'll save enough weight to use the all-steel body. But then we have to figure out how to armor the tires.
